Louise Wilcox is a mixed media abstract artist. She expresses her love for color, movement, and texture through her artwork.
With a decade in the fashion industry, Louise gained confidence in her artistic decision-making and now enjoys exploring her creativity through her abstract art practice. She worked in the footwear industry for a large family-owned business from ages 19 to 31. Louise's passion for footwear began at a young age when she started drawing shoes at 8. Through an internship, she embarked on a 12-year career, starting as a designer and eventually becoming the head of product, overseeing the design team.
After taking time off to start a family, Louise returned to her creative side while raising her two young daughters. Over the past 2-3 years, she practiced art, honing her skills, experimenting with materials, and developing a distinct style. Art became therapeutic for her, helping her heal from postnatal depression after the birth of her second daughter. Gradually, Louise's art practice evolved into a strong commission-based business, giving her hope and purpose.
As a former footwear designer, Louise has always been drawn to travel, art galleries, museums, and antique markets for inspiration. Now, as she delves deeper into her artistic practice, she infuses her love and passion for these experiences into her art, applying the same design principles and methodology to each piece. Art and design have been lifelong passions for her.
Growing up, she was surrounded by beautiful art, influenced by her great grandfather, esteemed Australian artist Eric Thake. His boundary-pushing work, often laced with humor, has been showcased in galleries such as NGV, Art Gallery of NSW, Bridget McDonnell Gallery, State Library of Victoria, and the National Gallery of Australia. Other influences include Dale Frank, Jean Faucheur, Josef Albers and Helen Frankenthaler.
Louise's unique art pieces are created using mirror, canvas, enamel, and resin. Through experimentation, she has developed techniques of pouring and mixing materials to achieve a free-flowing style. Her practice involves building layers and depth with mixed materials and sculpture work, resulting in abstract, emotive, large-scale artworks. Each piece is intended to evoke an emotional and passionate response, creating an atmospheric experience. She allows her artistic nature to guide her, selecting a palette that reflects her energy.
Even though there are strong themes surrounding the theory behind her exhibitions, There is little plan on how each piece of art will turn out, rather a mix of planning, vision and then experimentation takes place. She applys materials very liberally allowing translucent pools to form and take their own natural shape, composition and pattern.
